Safety first

A real quick post before I put up an entry to mark your third birthday...

Today you helped Mommy make dinner. You very dutifully and precisely chopped up red peppers with your (dull) knife. Then you chopped up some kalamata olives. But when it came time to roll out the dough, I had to deny helper priviliges (much to your great dismay) because we were running behind and I didn't want to experiment since we needed most of it to make the pastries.

Once I popped everything in the oven, we ended up with one piece of dough left over. You sweetly asked me, "Can I roll it?" I thought it was a great chance to get you started on that part of baking. So you determinedly went in search of your rolling pin and climbed back on the stool. You were so excited.

Of course, I had to snap photos, as I tend to do. The sun was streaming in through the window and creating some very bad lighting conditions. I went over to pull down the shade. On the last pull, something snapped and a tiny piece of plastic fell to the floor. I checked the shade to see that I had indeed broken something, said "Oh, well" because I wasn't going to fix it at that moment, then went back to grab the camera.

You immediately climbed down from the stool and went to get the plastic piece I'd left on the floor. "It's OK, sweetie, I'll get it later. As soon as we're done." But you were intent. Finally you stood up and announced, "We need pick these up, Momma. It might hurt someone's feet they step on it."

I shall now call you Mr. Considerate!
