Oh, where, oh, where has my little Devin gone?

My little Devin is disappearing in two ways.

First, you're growing up. You look so much like a little boy now and hardly at all like a toddler. Thinner cheeks. Longer legs. And big-boy attitude on top of everything. It's like I blinked and you're suddenly 15! There's something so wise about you. Sure, you pitch temper tantrums and cry hysterically when Juliette bumps you with her tail, but you also seem to see things in this world that escape me. You're incredibly observant and particular. If I don't understand you, you go to great lengths to make sure that I do.

Like the other day when you pointed at the stuff on the counter and said, "What that lellow (yellow) thing, Momma?" I looked at the cups and other things that were in that direction and saw nothing yellow. "The lellow thing. There," you said, pointing adamantly. "The chitch." Wha? "The lellow thing!" Eh? "Let me show you, Momma!" So I picked you up and let you point. To the light switch. The two colors you still have trouble with are white and yellow. They're so close. So I was truly looking for a yellow thing and had no idea what a chitch was. But I certainly found out!

Secondly, you're coming out of your shell in front of my camera. I had a honeymoon phase with you as a baby. You were fine with it stuck in your face constantly. But somewhere around two or so, you began to rebel. You often said things like, "No, Mommy. Camma way!" So I've been backing off and shooting other things, which is fun. And only taking snaps of you when you seem comfortable.

Lately, that camera-shy Devin seems to have disappeared. You actually asked me very sweetly on the car ride home the other day, "Mommy, can you take my picture when we get home?" I was stunned. You were asking for a photoshoot. And you cooperated pretty nicely at the park, strutting around for me. It was so cute.

Tonight we sat on the deck eating ice cream and you said, "Mommy, take my picture." Of course my camera was close by so I snapped a few. Then you stuck your spoon in your mouth and looked at me. I laughed. You pulled it out and said, "Mommy, I'm reaaaadddy." "For what, sweetie?" "For you to take my picture." You've gone from toddler to ham in just the past week!
